Venues in Budapest

Imported brand-name clothing and electronic goods in Hungary tend to be a bit overpriced. On the other hand, Hungarian wine is a steal, and it's important to have your priorities in order. The best-known shopping street in Budapest is Váci utca, which is actually known as the 'shopping street'. It has been pedestrianised and runs from Vörösmarty Square to the Central Market Hall in Pest. Andrássy utca, the Champs Elysées of Budapest, is also in Pest, and is the hub for designer goods – though bargains in this realm are scarce in Hungary. Bargain hunters will instead head for markets such as the Great Market Hall or Budapest’s various flea markets for antiques, handcrafted and homespun goods. Folk-art embroidery and ceramics, wooden toys, boxes and dolls, as well as Herend or Zsolnay porcelain are traditional favourites as souvenirs. Gourmets could add goose liver to that list, dependent on their ethical stance.
