Buses & Trolleybuses

Vilnius     more than a year ago
All buses and trolleybuses in Vilnius are owned and operated by the Municipality. Paper tickets for single journeys can be bought from the driver, with the fare priced at €1 for a single journey of any length on any one vehicle. Remember to validate them by punching them in the ticket puncher nearby. Unless you plan on spending a lot of time using public transport, this simple system should be more than adequate, although it’s worth mentioning the alternative, namely the Vilniečio Kortelė, an electronic card available for €1.50 from kiosks around town, including at the airport. Buy a number of journeys and top the card up when you need to from any kiosk around town. The most useful top-up options are for journeys lasting up to 30 minutes at €0.65, or up to 60 minutes for €0.90. The card is used by holding it against the yellow machine on any bus or trolleybus, which automatically takes the fare off the card. You can then board as many buses or trolleybuses as it takes to reach your destination within the time limit you've paid for. Other options are available for tickets valid from one to 270 days, although we recommend you get a local to help you if choosing one of these. Find out all you need to know about schedules online at www.vilniustransport.lt and more about the Vilniečio Kortelė at www.vilniusticket.lt. The capital's public transport system starts working at around 05:00 and continues throughout the day until around 23:00. A limited night bus service operates on Friday and Saturday nights until around 03:00 as well as on New Year's Eve and one or two other special occasions. Just like anywhere else in the world, keep your valuables out of sight and reach when travelling.
