Bydgoszcz

Bydgoszcz Train Station

Arriving to Bydgoszcz by train, passing through endless abandoned factories and gloomy tower blocks, does no justice to the city centre that awaits. The main train station, Bydgoszcz Główna, is about 2km northwest of the Old Town in a sparkling but very oddly-shaped glass hall, which has replaced the Commie-era carbuncle that haunted the area before. The facilities are all up to 21st-century standards: wheelchair access, wifi, an ATM, 24-hour luggage lockers, convenience stores, a pharmacy, a book store, and some food and coffee opportunities. Do note that using the toilets costs 2.5zł, a familiar situation for anyone used to travelling by rail in Poland.

To get to the centre, head out of the doors and to the bus and tram stop straight across the road on ul. Dworcowa. Trams no. 5 and 8 will take you to Plac Teatralny in 7 minutes. If you're using a taxi then you’ll find chariots standing a little to the right of the main entrance. These will usually charge you around 15zł to get to the old town; make sure the rates are displayed clearly on the taxi before getting in.
