Western Crete is spectacular both in the city and in the countryside. Chania probably is the town that charms more travelers than any other on the island. Mixing the Venetian and the Ottoman past, the place also holds the remains of Ancient Kydonia. Walking around the Old Port and the Old Town is something no one on a trip to that area should allow for missing.
On the other hand, there is plenty to discover out of the city. Some of the most enchanting Cretan beaches are situated near Chania. The largest city in the western part of the island is a good starting point for the exploration of the nearby mountains. Hiking through the Samaria Gorge is the most popular route, but definitely not the only one possible.
