Top 5 Souvenirs from Aarhus

more than a year ago
We travel to create memories (and add pounds to the gut), and few things spark old memories more than a collection of souvenirs from past trips. Mementos are almost as important as memories, catalysts as they are for reminding us why we book those flights and seek those stamps. The Danes know their way around a gift, and that fact rings true in the country’s second city. These are our favourite Aarhus souvenirs.

Nisse

We’re reaching our limit when it comes to Hygge content online, but if it leads to houses across the world giving homes to gnomes, we’re all for it. A ‘Nisse’ is a mythical (supposedly) creature from folklore that is generally found at Christmas, what with the massive red hat and all that. The Nisse is a classic piece of Scandinavian storytelling, and you’ll have plenty of opportunity to purchase your own in Aarhus.

Salty Liquorice

We’re slaves to confectionary, our sweet tooth knows no bounds, and if its comes with a load of sugar we’re more than likely going to put our hands out like Oliver. Salty liquorice is the done thing in these parts, a classic piece of Danish creativity that has to be tried. The European Union isn’t too fond of the stuff, but you’ll find salmiak-flavoured things all across the city.

Smiling Viking

Aarhus is known as the ‘City of Smiles’, quite the achievement when you consider Denmark’s status as the happiest country on the planet. You’ll find no end of smiling souvenirs here, and we’re always going to pop big for an overly-chuffed looking medieval marauder. They might be the sorts of things that give you nightmares, but they are also quite hilarious. Head to the souvenir shops to find your own grinning viking.

Danish Flag

We may have mentioned it elsewhere, but did you know that the Danish flag is the oldest continuously used flag on the planet? Well, now you do. It makes for a great souvenir too, what with its distinct red and white design, and you’ll see it emblazoned on anything and everything around town. Our favourite Danish flag souvenir? We saw a Danish flag G-string once, and we haven’t slept the same since.

Old Posters

The Danish Poster Museum is one of our favourite museums in Aarhus, and we rarely pass up the opportunity to purchase some vintage advertising. The collection at the museum is excellent and the shop is worth a look — you might just find a reason to drink Carlsberg. Old posters are the absolute best, and we’ve not found many better places for the art form than darling Aarhus.
