UEFA EURO 2020 in Bucharest

more than a year ago

All football fans have a new reason to celebrate this year: UEFA EURO celebrates its ‘60th anniversary with a tournament that will be played across all corners of Europe. We’re talking about 13 host cities that are all connected in one big event this summer, Bucharest being one of them. Romania’s capital will host Euro 2020 together with London, Munich, Rome, Baku, Sankt Petersburg, Bilbao, Budapest, Glasgow, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Brussels and Dublin.

This winter, Bucharest already started promoting this event with the help of the festive Christmas lights dedicated to Euro 2020, which have been displayed on the main boulevard of the city, between University Square and Romana Square.

Speaking of the main event, the matches will be held at the National Arena Bucharest in June, a stadium with a capacity of 54,000 seats located approximately 5km away from the city center. The National Arena stands on the site of the old National Stadium, which remained in history for hosting one of Romania's biggest achievements in the UEFA European Championship - a famous 1-0 EURO qualifying defeat of Italy in 1983.

There will also be the UEFA Festival, where the streets of Bucharest will come to life with a celebration of arts, culture, music and, of course, football, for no less than 31 days. This is a great opportunity for traveling fans and locals to celebrate together, especially that all UEFA Festival activities are free!

In the center of the Festival will be the Football Village situated on Unirii Boulevard, where you will be able to enjoy live match screenings, football pitches, food & drinks but also some artistic and cultural performances. This is a great activity for friends and family, no matter the age.

If you want something more, the Constitution Square will have a Fan Zone, an area dedicated to the most passionate football fans. The Fan Zone will have giant screens to watch the games together with thousands of fellow football fans and the electric atmosphere you need to have the best time possible in an iconic Bucharest setting.

To keep updated with the Festival activities, make sure to check the UEFA website for all the information on schedule and locations.

The logo

The UEFA EURO 2020 brand chose the bridge as a symbol for this connection and unity: “Bridges cross barriers. Bridges connect opposite sides and people, just like football.”

Because every city has its iconic bridge that serves as an important part of the identity of a city, Bucharest has the Basarab Overpass (Romanian: Pasajul Basarab) as the bridge on the logo.

This road overpass was officially inaugurated in 2011 and connects Nicolae Titulescu blvd. and Grozǎveşti Road, and also accommodates the number 1 tram line, the only circular tram line in Bucharest that follows the inner traffic circle of the city.
The bridge is not only beautiful and impressive, but it’s also the widest cable-stayed bridge in Europe, measuring a width of 44,5 meters over the railways near the Gara de Nord train station, while the average width measures almost 25 meters.
