Prožura, a medieval village was often visited by nobility during the Republic of Dubrovnik as a place for relaxation and vacation. Although Prožura is a rather small village, it has three beautiful churches: the Church of the Holy Trinity, the Church of St Martin and the Church of St Rocco. The Church of the Holy Trinity, most likely built by the Benedictines from Lokrum in 1477 when the estate was bequeathed to them, has similar characteristics to Dubrovnik's Gothic chapels. Inside here, a Romanesque bronze crucifix from 15th century has figured representations of St Blaise (the patron saint of Dubrovnik), St Martin (the saint of the poor) and St Nicholas (the saint of sailors and fishermen). Besides this church, a monastery was built by the Benedictines of Lokrum. They lived and worked here until the 18th century, nowadays what remains are only ruins. The Church of St Martin, situated above the village has a small porch from the 14th century. The graveyard of Prožura town is located in front of the church. Holy mss is conducted St Martin's Day is celebrated on November 11 every year. The Church of St Rocco is also located on a hill above the city and has a dominating watch tower overlooking the town. Other interesting facts to note, the birth of Pavao Gracić, the bishop of Ston from 1365 to 1652 and, this area witness many a frequent attack in the 17th century.
