The island of Ireland has 32 counties which are divided up into four provinces. Each county has a team that will compete for the All Ireland Championship or League titles every year. There are over 2,500 clubs in Ireland.

The All Ireland Championship is a knock-out tournament that takes place between May and September each year. The League takes place between October and April and is more a round-robin style tournament.

At the start of the game and at the re-start after half-time the referee throws-in the ball and two palyers of each team try to win possession before passing back to other members of the team. Referees usually wear black. The officials who stand on either side of the goalposts to indicate the scores wear white coats.

A match has two halves each of 30minutes for club level and 35minutes for county level. Half time is for approximately 10-15minutes long.

Scoring is made up of points and goals. Each goal is worth three points. Points are scored by sending the ball over the crossbar and between the two uprights of the goalposts. In order to score a goal you have to get the ball under the crossbar and into the net. A white flag is waved for a point and a green onw for a goal. The score line always reads goals then points with a hyphen seperatingthem, ex. 1-15 would mean 1 goal and 15 points = total score of 18 points.

All players are non professionals are all training and matches are played in their own free time. Therefore the commitment towards the game from each player is unique and bonds the players and supporters tightly.
