Eindhoven

Public laboratory

more than a year ago
Eindhoven has been a fertile breeding ground for many innovations in the fields of technology, design and general knowledge for the past two centuries. Pioneering work seems to be synonymous with the way people think in this thriving city. One of the latest controversial social experiments is being closely watched by Dutch law enforcement, as it could potentially solve a wide range of problems associated with urban youth in the Netherlands. During weekends - and other party nights - the area around Stratumseind is packed with youngsters dripping with adrenaline, which often leads to fights and police intervention. A new, revolutionary strategy, however, could possibly stop these drunken kids from showing off their virility in public. Since early 2015 a certain orange fragrance has been sprayed across the length of this infamous party street, which is meant to soothe and calm passersby. Tests with colours, lights and sounds are also in the works and the police have already claimed to have positive effects when the fragrance is sprayed on violent inmates in holding cells.
