People might close their eyes and imagine historic wars being led to high-ranking individuals in elegant suites, pushing toy soldiers across massive maps, but the reality has always been somewhat different. Winston Churchill marshalled the nation through World War II from this underground complex in Westminster, although the historic rooms weren’t open to the public until a big push by Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s. The Churchill War Rooms make up one of the five branches of the Imperial War Museum.
