University of Tartu Art Museum

The University of Tartu Art Museum is located in the historic Main Building of the university and features a Pompeian-style interior. The museum's permanent collection primarily features sculptures: life-size plaster cast copies of exceptional ancient Greek and Roman pieces. Furthermore, the Art Museum displays a variety of original ancient artifacts, including coins, vases, clay lamps, and cuneiform tablets. A highlight is the mysterious mummy chamber, where you can see a genuine Egyptian mummies. Additionally, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions.
Visitors can also explore the university's decorated assembly hall, and the historical student lock-up room, located in the attic of the main building where, in the 19th Century, students were incarcerated for minor offences. The punishment for returning a library book late was 2 days. Insulting a cloakroom attendant would get you 5 days, and duelling, 3 weeks. Cartoons and graffiti the students scribbled still cover the walls.
