The main building of the University of Tartu is one of the most outstanding examples of classical architecture in Estonia. It was built between 1804 and 1809 to the design of the university’s architect Johann Wilhelm Krause at the foot of Toome Hill, on the plot of the former St. Mary’s Church. Today, the building houses the university’s administrative offices, the School of Theology and Religious Studies, the Department of Art History, and the University of Tartu Art Museum.
The main building is open to visitors. Through the University of Tartu Art Museum, guests can explore the historic assembly hall and the former student lock-up room in the attic. The University of Tartu Art Museum displays plaster cast copies of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, along with the must-see 'Chamber of Mummies'.
