In the 1970s the apartheid government began the demolition of the once bustling Fietas neighbourhood (now known as Pageview). The busy market street, which was often compared to the famous Petticoat Lane in London, fell silent as its traders were forced to move to distant townships and its multi-racial community was torn apart.
The small Fietas Museum is located in one of the few surviving original buildings and includes an exhibition of photographs of the area before, during and after its destruction donated by renowned South African photographer David Goldblatt. The museum also has a rich collection of personal testimonies and family photographs from former residents which form a tribute to the colourful life that was once lived here by the close-knit community.
A visit can be combined with a trip to the nearby Sophiatown Heritage and Cultural Centre and to the bustling Indian neighbourhood Fordsburg. The museum space can be hired for book launches, poetry reading or private tea/lunch receptions.
