Aladža Mosque

Foča 73300     more than a year ago
Recently rebuilt after the wartime destruction of the original, the Aladža Mosque is once again an integral part of the visual life of Foča. The mosque was known as one of the most beautiful in the area and the reconstruction pays homage to that beauty. The original was built in 1549 and immediately became a major centre for the Islamic faith in the region, garnering such compliments as to earn the name the ‘Colourful Mosque’. It was one of the few mosques in Bosnia & Herzegovina to get the full Ottoman treatment when it comes to the interior, with extra attention given to its ornaments, architecture and decoration. Its wall paintings were the most famous of all, true gems of Ottoman art and architecture.
