Lynch’s Castle

Shop St     more than a year ago
Back in the 15th Century there lived a James Lynch, the city mayor. Now whether he felt like he had to live up to his name or not, he is famous, or infamous for that matter, for hanging his own son because he had murdered a Spanish sailor visiting the city. This house that now houses a bank deserves to be called “castle” because it was originally built as a strong fortification against raids, and decorated with gargoyles to protect against evil ghosts and evil rainwater. Look closely and you will find the Lynch coat of arms, which, surprisingly, doesn’t depict the poor Spanish guy.
