18th century royals sure did love their exotic plants. These wild flora can’t survive the harsh European winters without some assistance, so this gorgeous Baroque palace was constructed at the beginning of the 18th century to provide protection for the citrus charmers. Johann Conrad Giesler’s stunning work overlooks the symmetrical meadows of the Karlsaue Park, creating an atmosphere that seems a million miles away from the destruction that was wrought upon the building in WWII. Gorgeous on the inside and out, the Orangerie is home to the Astronomisch-Physikalisches Kabinett science collection and an eponymouse restaurant.
