Memorial of the Great Community Synagogue

In 1855, the Great Community Synagogue was built for Leipzig’s thriving Jewish community. In 1938, the Nazis destroyed the synagogue as part of their efforts to dispel the Jews. Sixty-three years later, a memorial designed by Anna Dilengite and Sebastian Helm from Leipzig stands on that same spot. Where the pews once were, 140 bronze chairs take their place.
