Glenshiel is one of Johannesburg’s great historic homes. Designed by renowned architects Sir Herbert Baker and his partner Frank Fleming, it was built in 1910. Glenshiel is the last large home that Baker built in Johannesburg and is considered the most interesting. The original property extended over 27 acres and went right down to Jan Smuts Avenue. Much of the area below Pallinghurst Road was used mainly for growing vegetables and herbs. The grounds were meticulously cared for by no less than 27 full-time gardeners.
Today Recitals at Glenshiel are held one Sunday every month, and they have a wonderful Christmas Fair each year. Views from Glenshiel are magnificent so it is well worth a visit (you can book a tour to see it). The venue can also be hired for weddings and similar events.
