If you were guessing solely based on photos, one could be forgiven for confusing the Gold Coast's skyline with those of Dubai or Doha, as it's glistening glass skyscrapers and sandy beaches as far as the eye can see.

Located in Queensland, just south of Brisbane and some 850km north of Sydney, while it's perhaps not as widely known abroad as some other Australian cities, the Gold Coast is the country's sixth largest city, and the place where some 9m domestic Australian tourists (and 1m foreigners) come to relax, unwind, eat, drink, swim, party and generally have a good time on their own holidays. What brings nearly half of Australia's population here each year?

The main draw of course is the 70km of coastline, most of which is comprised of beautiful golden beaches – the name is not a coincidence after all – centred around the world famous district of Surfers Paradise. What's more, it's also Australia's theme park capital, and boasts countless world-class restaurants, bars, clubs and various other entertainment options, as well as some of the most luxurious accommodation you'll find anywhere in the world. However, it's not all surf, sand and fun along the beach here, as a short drive away in the hinterland you can visit breathtaking national parks, ancient rainforest, wildlife sanctuaries and other amazing natural attractions.

For all these reasons and more we've decided to take on the challenge of putting the Gold Coast in your pocket in the very near future!
