One of the few backpacker options on the Gold Coast that is outside of Surfers Paradise, Coolangatta is a great district to stay in for those who aren't keen on the shiny skyscrapers and ultra-modern surrounds that make up the city's most popular areas. Located above the Coolangatta Sands Hotel, which is actually not a hotel, but a huge modern bar and lounge known locally as just The Sands. The vibe at the hostel is lively, and in addition to its proximity to the beach, the standout amenity here is the huge terrace that wraps around half the building facing the main intersection.
