One of the most rapidly developing areas of art in Australia is that by Indigenous artists, and with the opening of the Desert Art Centre in Broadbeach in 2016, visitors to the Gold Coast now finally have a venue where they can learn more about this important and fascinating field, as well as purchase works from some of its leading artists. What's more, thanks to the Centre's residency program, it's often possible to actually watch the artists work on their creations. Curators Geoff Small and Paul Curtis have decades of experience representing Indigenous artists from the Central and Western desert regions, many of whom have their works in collections at top museums in Australia and abroad. The Centre is a member of the Indigenous Aboriginal Art Association of Australia, whose goal is to ensure that the Aboriginal visual arts industry remains vibrant, healthy, sustainable and inclusive. In addition to what's available for viewing in person, an extensive collection of artworks can be viewed and purchased online, all of which are accompanied by the stories behind the pieces, as well as detailed artist biographies.
