Ripley’s Believe It or Not! has been appearing in newspapers since 1919, bringing readers news of the fantastic, outlandish and often plain unbelievable. The first Ripley’s Odditorium opened in 1933 and was something of a freak show, but in the current incarnations of these museums, now over 30 worldwide, are more family-friendly affairs. The one at Surfers Paradise has 15 themed galleries of fascinating artifacts, interactive exhibits, games and movies, which educate as much as they entertain. You’ll see shrunken heads, survive a walk through a vortex tunnel and learn about some of the strangest and most interesting people, animals and objects from around the world. While suitable for all the family, some galleries are perhaps best left to the parents’ discretion, but these are clearly labelled in advance. A trip through the Odditorium can take between one and two hours, so plan your day accordingly. Cameras are allowed, but, take it from us, there are things here you’ll never forget seeing.
