Got Tjark

Religious people who wanna attend a church service during their stay on the island, have two choices: the protestant (10:00 am) and a catholic (10:30 am) mass. A minority of the inhabitants follows the catholic preaching and can visit the parochie St. Egbert at the Badweg 69. The biggest church building on Schiermonnikoog is the Got Tjark, which means in the local language (nowadays only spoken by around 70 people) Big Church. Build in 1866, it replaced an earlier church at the same spot that only lasted for 104 years. The earliest worshipping building on the islands dates back to the 15th century. Remarkably the Got Tjark has no (working) clock, although the organ from 1895 is well worth listening too. The church by itself got a complete renovation in 1991, the stone tower (from 1909) in 2006. At the attached graveyard are some worth visiting graves, like the artist (Martin van Waning) who made the famous statue of the monk in front of the Tourist Office.
