To explain the meaning of the island's name, it's best to divide it in three separate parts: Schier, Monnik and Oog. Schier stands for grey, Monnik means monks and Oog is translated as island. So it literally means ‘island of the grey monks’ referring to the 17th century monks of the Claerkamp monastery that once lived here.
