Celle became the residence of the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg in 1378. Duke Ernst der Bekenner had the castle rebuilt in Renaissance style in 1530. In the eighteenth century, the last duke, Georg Wilhelm, an avid art lover, gave the castle its current guise.
