Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport is located just about 5 kilometers away from the heart of the city to the east. It is the second busiest air transportation hub in Greece after Athens, and it operates the higher number of charter flights in the country. More than 7 million people visit Crete every year and most of them land at Heraklion Airport. So, the place is crowded in the summer months even if it was expanded and modernized in 2018. Flight delays are not unusual, especially during the summer. A new airport is in the plans, but it is not entirely clear when it will be ready to operate flights.
