Gortyn is about 40 km away from the largest city on the island and is hosts of the most prominent archaeological objects next to Knossos and Phaistos. This was the seat of the Cretan governor during the Roman rule. The Praetorium is the place that attracts most of the travelers here. There are inter-city buses for the journey from Heraklion to Gortyn.
