Glide into the lobby here and it's like making an entrance on a film set. Chandeliers, marble pillars and gold leaf are all over the place – some are Belle Epoque originals, more are reproductions. The rooms are large, with heavy doors and high ceilings. The historic Café New York, with its ornate frescoes and literary past is on the premises and worth a visit. The service is slightly erratic, with the occasional rolling of the eyes or whistle between the teeth. Any number of bars and cafes are within walking distance to the hotel, which is also very handy for public transport, with metro, tram and major bus lines all less than a minute's walk away.

Although I wasn't staying at the here, it was just down the road from my hotel so I called into the Café New York which is recommended in all the guidebooks. While the surroundings were certainly spectacular and should be on the must-see list of everyone visiting Budapest, I found the menu to be over-priced and the service rushed. If you're really feeling nostalgic for a slice of pre-1914 Mitteleuropa, then I'd recommend the Hotel Astoria Mirror Café & Restaurant over this place any day of the week. That said, if you just want a couple of nice photos to show the folks back home then the New York Café will more than suffice, although you'll pay handsomely for the privilege. I'd suggest you just stick to a coffee or hot chocolate to keep the cost down.
