A vast expanse of a café, renovated to recall its late-19th century glory days. In the manner approved of old, coffee arrives at your table with a tiny pitcher of hot, steamed milk, a small cookie and a glass of water. Also serves lunch and dinner, with a reasonable selection of vegetarian dishes.

Called in here for a quick coffee as it's mentioned in all the guidebooks. It was fairly early on and the place was quite empty and so the service was quick and efficient [although not particularly friendly]. The draw here though isn't really the coffee and cakes, it's the chance to soak up the atmosphere of a Central European coffee house during the heyday of the Austro-Hungarian Empire - and on that level it doesn't disappoint. It's fairly good value too if you just stick to the hot beverages. If, like me, you're nostalgic for the ambiance of pre-First World War Europe then you'll probably consider a drink or two here money well spent. If all you're after is a decent coffee and some cake though there are far better places to spend your money in Budapest.
