In 1944 Ben Dunne started his own business in Cork under the slogan ‘Better Value’ - a line still used today. Police were called to contain the crowds at that first opening, and in 1960 this Dublin flagship store opened. Today Dunnes is a privately-owned Irish Company with stores in Ireland, England, Scotland and Spain. The Dunnes family are among Ireland's richest. Like Penneys (aka Primark), Dunnes is particularly popular for bargain fashions and home accessories.
