Ireland's only true fjord forms a natural border between the counties of Mayo and Galway, winding its way 9 miles inland from its mouth at Inis Barna (Island of the Gap) to the lovely little town of Leenane, a place made famous by film versions of The Quiet Man and The Field. The area boasts a wonderfully beautiful landscape, but also plays host to a whole range of activities such as hiking, cycling, sailing and kayaking. But the clear waters mean it is a real mecca for divers and nature lovers on the lookout for fish, otters, seabirds and even the occasional dolphin.
