This impressive city square is a rare bird in South African cities. The Square gardens, dominated by a statue of Paul Kruger, an iconic figure of Boer resistance to British rule, look onto the the Palace of Justice, where Nelson Mandela and his compatriots were tried and sentenced to life in prison during the famous Rivonia Trial of 1964. Other historic buildings include the Ou Raadsaal (Old Government) building, the Old Capitol Theatre and the Old Nederlandsche Bank building. Grab an al fresco breakfast and watch the passersby from the historic Cafe Riche right on the square.
