This square is one of the loveliest in the city thanks to the 18th & 19th century buildings, trees and fountain. Rudolf von Hapsburg granted Kaiserslautern its civic charter in 1276 and introduced Franciscan monks to the city who built St. Martin’s Church at the beginning of the 14th century; the monastery was dissolved at the end of the 18th century. Inside, check out the mirror writing of Psalm 116, statues of St. Martin and Norbert von Xanten, the founder of the Premonstratensian Order. The font is the only original piece left in the church and was made in 1516.
