This research vessel, named in honour of Cosmonaut Viktor Patsayev who was raised in the Oblast, was designed for space communication and since 2001 has been docked here where it now plays host to a museum. In an illustrious history, the ship was used to create a nuclear-missile shield and in the testing and flight of spacecraft. In the 1990s the ship was used as a satellite and space station communications vessel sailing the world’s oceans. Although now permanently docked, the ship is still in communication with the International Space Station and is a mass of antennae and satellite dishes.
