Some alums of Central Bucks West High School in Doylestown, PA go on to become editors for Poland In Your Pocket; others - as is the case of Natalie Laura Mering - go on to become successful recording and touring artists, under the name Weyes Blood (pronounced 'Wise Blood'). Moving around a lot with her family as a child, Mering left the eventual family nest in PA after graduation, landing in Portland, OR where she became a part of the underground noise scene, touring as a member of freak rock collective Jackie-O Motherfucker. Soon she was striking out on her own, bouncing from city to city and honing her sound as Weyes Blood, which over the course of four albums has remained devotional and slightly haunted, while burnishing off the noisy edges, becoming less experimental and more grounded in folk and pop, as all the while critical response has been increasingly enthusiastic. Leading music outlet Pitchfork has given her last two albums, 2016's Front Row Seat to Earth and this year's Titanic Rising, their coveted 'Best New Music' designation, describing her latest album as "a grand, sentimental ode to living and loving in the shadow of doom." Congrats, and welcome to Katowice, Natalie.
