Set in a quiet suburb and dating back to 1891, a wander round this fascinating burial ground offers a quick history lesson in seven separate plots. Among the more traditional rows of fallen Lithuanian, Russian and German soldiers are a handful of monuments commemorating the transatlantic pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas, the fighter pilot and cosmonaut Rimantas Stankevičius and, last but not least, Karolis Požėla, Juozas Greifenbergeris, Kazys Giedrys and Rapolas Čarnas, better known as the Keturi Komunarai (Four Communards), a group of communists murdered during the December 1926 coup d'état that brought an end to Lithuania’s fledgling interwar democracy. Take bus Nº42 during the week and Nº6a at the weekend from the city centre and get off at the Karių Kapinės stop.
