Despite being the second biggest city in the country, Košice remains something of a blind spot on the touring schedule of most big bands in the modern age. Still, there are plenty of places to catch live music at the weekends, from snotty punk bands to slick DJs getting paid money to play other people’s songs. Keep an eye on all the websites for full schedules.
While not quite as dark and dingy as we’d like somewhere called ‘RockHell’ to be, there’s still plenty to love about this rock pub at the very end of Hlavna. Enter the building and descend down a couple of flights of stairs into an underground bar that is a breath of fresh air in winter and a literal breath of fresh air in summer. Iron Maiden’s ‘Trooper’ can be found on tap, and there’s plenty of live music throughout the week.
The premier place for live bands on the noisier end of the musical spectrum, Collosseum is probably the best place to check for anyone after touring bands and local hidden gems. The tagline of the place is ‘where subculture lives’ and that definitely feels apt, with a consistent schedule of rock, metal and punk bands taking to the stage.
It stands for ‘Amphitheatre Košice, if you were wondering. If a major international touring sensation is stopping in Košice to wow the masses, there’s a good chance that they’ll be doing so at AMFIK, located in the northern part of town. The schedule can be delightfully varied, showing just how diverse modern mainstream tastes are. The summer of 2019 sees Goran Bregović followed by Limp Bizkit, which says more than any description could.
Come to think of it, an old abandoned tobacco factory is the perfect place for a creative arts hub. Tabačka Kulturfabrik ticks this box in Košice, with more than 10 years of productivity and cultural creativity now behind it. There is a bistro, art spaces and plenty of live music, so keep an eye on the website to see what is on the calendar.
Named after the famous travelling sculptor who made his name in Košice, Vinotéka Löffler sits on the city’s main boulevard and simply allows its fine collection of wine to do the rest. There is food too, a menu put together to compliment those domestic and international wines. We’ll have a rare steak and a glass of red, thank you very much.
Fans of jets and planes, this one is for you. Košice’s Museum of Aviation shows off some seriously impressive winged vehicles, transport and military planes from each era of aviation history. The permanent exhibitions are embellished by a rotating cast of temporary equivalents, at this curious museum not too far from the airport. How very apt.
