'Magdalena' Open-Air Oil Industry Heritage Museum

  ul. Lipowa 14      (+48) 600 49 14 70     more than a year ago
If you're an acolyte of industrial tourism, get your hands greasy at this open-air museum/heritage park/'skansen' (as the locals would call it). Located on the fringes of Gorlice on the site of the former 'Magdalena' oil mine, this truly unique place is the labour of Mr. Kazimierz Dudek, a former oil miner who also owns and lives on the property. Aware that evidence of his own livelihood, and that of a large part of his community, was in danger of disappearing and being forgotten, Mr. Dudek began collecting old relics of the oil industry here and opened his museum to the public in 2012. On the large hillside site you'll see an array of equipment, tools, models, photos and displays documenting the history of oil extraction in the Gorlice Oil Basin, including a forge, mining regalia, Barbórka mugs, kerosene lamps and a valuable collection of bottles filled with different types of crude oil from across the region. The most prominent artefact is the tall wooden oil drilling rig, which predates 1880, and whose tower you can climb for beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. Mr. Dudek is always on hand and happy to give visitors a tour, explaining the processes and displays, so make sure you have a Polish speaker with you to not miss out on this living treasure. An absolute oil geyser of knowledge, it's unclear what this place would or will be without him, so don't miss your chance to visit. What's more, and most surprising, is you can also use the picnic area, grill and football/soccer field onsite if local teens aren't already occupying it (bring your cleats).
