Kutná Hora

Grunta

Grunta     more than a year ago
The village is located 3 km from Kutná Hora in the direction of Kolín. The first record of Grunta dates back to 1305. In medieval times, silver extracted from Kutná Hora’s mines was processed (melted), and the actually extraction of silver took place not too far away. There are still visible slag heaps, remains of medieval smelting activities in the surroundings of Grunta. The landmark of the village and the entire valley is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Construction began in 1905-1908 according to the design of Rudolf and Jaroslav Vomáčka of Prague in the style of a pseudo-Romanesque basilica. The Art Nouveau paintings by academic spouses F. and M. Urban and coloured stained glass windows are of great value. The interior was designed by J. Kastner and K. Hilbert, who contributed to the completion of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague or the Church of St. Barbara in Kutná Hora. The north tower houses a bell from the second half of the 15th century, apparently from the workshop of Kutná Hora’s bell maker Ondřej Ptáček. The church is open to the public by prior arrangement.
