Most of the medieval square was destroyed during the last war, but has now been rebuilt with mixed results. The reconstructed town hall on the northern side of the square is graced with a baroque tower and a postmodern roof and is now once again open for business. The modern building that obscures the view of the square from Kaļķu is simply too ugly for words and has no place in the historic old town. The square is also graced by a statue of Roland, Rīga’s patron 'saint' of sorts.

Surrounded by beautiful re-built buildings, and a huge, ugly, Soviet monstrocity (but hey, that's the kind of thing the Soviets built...) But I came in November, and this square is by no means shielded from the frigid winds blowing in from the Daugava and the sea! Luckily, there is a number of cafés and restaurants nearby where you can warm up again.
