Souk al-Ahad Food Stalls

If you visit Souk al-Ahad (Sunday Market), and you really should as it's one of the only traditional Arab markets left in Beirut, make sure to go hungry, because amongst the endless stalls selling various bric-a-brac and cheap Chinese-made clothes, shoes, homewares and electronics, there are some of the city's tastiest, most authentic and cheapest street eats, mostly located at the outside fringes near one of the many entry gates. A half-dozen or so falafel stands always seem to have a queue and most also serve deep-fried cauliflower sandwiches, while Beirut's best chicken shawarma is served up dripping with grease and piping hot out of shack along the western wall. There's also one tiny (a quite literal hole in the wall) manouche place, as well as at least a couple stalls hawking freshly prepared knafeh, baklava and other Arabic pastries. However, keep in mind that this is a bustling flea market, so if you've got a weak stomach and/or put the utmost value on hygiene, you can go ahead and disregard everything you just read.
