The Best Places to Visit in the North of England

more than a year ago
When you think of England, the first place that comes to mind is probably London. While the capital is a fantastic place to visit, there are many more interesting towns and cities worth exploring. For your next trip to the UK, why not head to northern England? It’s a beautiful part of the country with everything from the idyllic countryside to cosmopolitan cities. In this post, we’ve rounded up our top picks.

Before we get started, a note on visas. Following Brexit, you may have been left confused about what you need to enter the UK. The good news is that not much has changed for short-stay tourism. Citizens of many countries can still travel to the United Kingdom for up to 6 months without a visa. In addition, nationals of GCC countries such as Oman and Bahrain can get a UK visa waiver (EVW) instead of a visa. Check the requirements for your nationality when planning your trip.

With that said, let’s take a look at our favorite travel destinations in northern England!

Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

Newcastle upon Tyne is the largest city in the northeast of England and it's a great place for a weekend trip. It's got a lot of history, but also has plenty of modern attractions too. You can spend your time seeing historic buildings like Grey's Monument or Newcastle Cathedral (formally the Cathedral of St Nicolas). Alternatively, enjoy some retail therapy at Eldon Square Shopping Centre or explore Newcastle Quayside to see some impressive architecture.

If you're looking for something more lively, head down to the Bigg Market on Friday and Saturday nights - it'll be buzzing with people!

To get out of the city, you can take a day trip to Whitley Bay or North Shields. Whitley Bay is just over 30 minutes away by train and it's got some great beaches where you can relax in the sun or enjoy some watersports like surfing or kiteboarding.

Durham

Just 15 minutes by train from Newcastle is the university city of Durham, the historic capital of County Durham. The best thing about Durham is its stunning cathedral. The Norman cathedral was built between 1093 and 1133 in the Romanesque style—the architecture is amazing!

Durham Cathedral, along with Durham Castle and the buildings between them, comprise Durham World Heritage Site. Construction of the castle began in 1072 by order of William the Conqueror, although it has been rebuilt several times since then. The castle has become more widely known for its role in the Harry Potter films and today is used as housing for Durham University students. It’s true, students here live in an actual castle!
There are lots of other things to do in the city—museums, art galleries, and boutique shops. Despite being a small city, Durham has plenty to offer.

Whitby in North Yorkshire

Whitby is a seaside town in North Yorkshire. It has a history as an important port and fishing town on the northeast coast of England.

Whitby is one of the most popular holiday destinations in North Yorkshire, and for good reason. The town's cobbled streets are lined with traditional pubs and tea rooms, while its harbor is home to some of the region's best seafood restaurants.

Sitting atop the cliffs overlooking the North Sea, Whitby Abbey is the town’s most famous landmark. Its imposing ruins are a focal point for tourists and locals alike, with many visitors climbing all 199 steps up to the summit on their first day in town.

The town is also famous for its annual Goth festival, which takes place each October. This celebration of all things dark and gothic draws thousands of revelers every year to enjoy live music and street performances. If you're looking for something a little less macabre then Whitby's other festivals should definitely be on your list too: there's an annual folk festival and Regatta.

Leeds

Leeds is a city in West Yorkshire known for its culture, heritage, and festivals. There are so many things to do in Leeds. The city is packed full of restaurants, bars, and clubs, as well as offering plenty of entertainment and culture.

If you're visiting Leeds for the first time you’re in for a treat. Tourist attractions include the iconic Town Hall building, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Leeds. It’s currently closed for refurbishment and is due to reopen in 2024 with new performance spaces and bars. It promises to offer an unbeatable visitor experience!
Another highlight is the Victoria Quarter, a premium shopping area with high street brands alongside independent boutiques. The architecture is beautiful, a unique shopping experience.

York

Less than 30 minutes by train from Leeds is the city of York, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK. There are countless things to do in York, including visiting the historic walled city and its attractions, shopping, dining, and enjoying a variety of activities such as walking tours and bike rides.

The history of this beautiful city dates back to Roman times. Today it's known for its medieval architecture and narrow cobbled streets. Visitors will enjoy exploring the many attractions within this charming city, including Clifford's Tower, the Shambles Market, and York Minster.

York is a great place to visit at any time of year but Christmas in the city is especially magical. York is illuminated with Christmas lights and there are lots of events taking place throughout the festive period.

Hopefully these suggestions have encouraged you to visit northern England. The north has so many beautiful towns and cities, and it’s perfect for any type of traveler. Whether you like history or nature, shopping or sightseeing, there is something here for everyone!
