The only brick-built Muslim house of worship in the country, this outstanding little building was constructed in 1930 on the site of a former 19th-century wooden mosque to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Vytautas the Great who’s largely credited with bringing the first Muslims to Lithuania at the end of the 14th century. Converted into a circus during the Soviet period, the building was fully renovated in 2018 and today serves the needs of Kaunas’ small and diverse Muslim community. Written in Arabic above the entrance is the Basmala, 'In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful'. Don't forget to take off your shoes before entering.
