Founded in 1828 at around the same time that the city’s original Jewish cemetery in Šnipiškės was closed, the Užupis Old Jewish Cemetery survived until after the war when it was destroyed by the Soviets and its gravestones, along with the gravestones from the Šnipiškės cemetery, used in the construction of several building projects. Now little more than a few broken stones on the side of a steep hill with a couple more on the top, a large memorial marks the site.
