Malaga Day Trips: Things to do in Ronda

more than a year ago
There are few places in the world like Ronda. Located an hour and a half away from Málaga, this cliff-top city offers perfect views on every corner, a town that has earned the ‘City of Dreams’ moniker that follows it at every turn and one that you’ll find yourself missing from the moment you leave.

RONDA MIGHT BE

one of the most magical cities in Andalusia, but calling it ‘easy to get to’ would be downright lying. But it isn’t impossible, and you have three decent options. There is one two-hour direct train, a pleasant enough route but not exactly the most efficient. There are also a number of direct buses between Málaga and Ronda. Travelling with your own wheels is undoubtedly the best option, offering freedom of time and a route that is all sorts of beautiful.

SO, RONDA, WHAT HAVE YOU GOT FOR US?

This is a mountaintop city overlooking a quite magnificent gorge, and if you’re not interested in such majesty then you might want to check your pulse. The incredible Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) spans the gorge and is one of Spain’s most iconic pieces of construction, one that gets better with every view. This 18th century piece of magic is reason enough to visit.

THERE IS MORE,

of course there is. The city’s bullring may now be a once-a-year attraction but it remains an integral part of Ronda history and culture, and the city’s proud history of bullfighting inspired many works by Hemingway himself. The city’s Arabic Baths are some of the best preserved in the country. But the town itself is the real attraction, and if you’re ballsy enough to check out the viewing balconies then more praise to you.

ALL THAT SIGHTSEEING IS

going to make you hungry, thirsty, likely both. Ronda has plenty of quality restaurants and bars, establishments looking to make the most of the ever-increasing number of visitors the town attracts. Be sure to try Rondeño chorizo when in town, spicy sausage that will get the blood pumping.

TERMS LIKE ‘SPECIAL’ AND 'UNIQUE'

get thrown around too freely in the modern age, but Ronda deserves every single compliment thrown its way. This mountaintop beauty is unlike anywhere else in the world, a true once in a lifetime place that you’ll desperately want to return to.
