Višegrad

Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge

There are plenty of bridges on the Drina river, but there is only one ‘Bridge on the Drina’. Ivo Andrić may have made it famous, but there is more to the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge than its spot as the title of the region’s most famous piece of literature. Built in 1577, this UNESCO World Heritage site was another work of art from the genius mind of Mimar Sinan, the Ottoman Empire’s court architect and the brains behind many of the empire’s most iconic mosques. The bridge in Višegrad has experienced a history as tumultuous as that of the town, with floods, wars and more battering it in the near five centuries since its construction. A major renovation took place in 2010 that renewed its glory, restoring one of the most wonderful pieces of Ottoman architecture in the Balkans. The bridge is full of stories, some hidden and some clear as day, but these tales are second to its quite miraculous aesthetics and intangible aura. One of our favourite things in Bosnia & Hercegovina, without a shadow of doubt.
