Is Monaco Still a Tourist-Friendly Space?

28 Aug 2025
Monaco’s reputation precedes it. Perched along the glittering Côte d’Azur, this tiny principality has long been associated with luxury yachts, Formula 1, and a general sense that the average traveller might feel more like an extra in someone else’s millionaire fantasy. But here’s the good news: Monaco isn’t only for the super-rich. In fact, with a bit of planning, ordinary tourists can experience its best sights without emptying their wallets.

One of the most reassuring aspects of enjoying Monaco without overspending is the affordability of Nice as a base. It’s just 23 minutes away by train or under an hour by public bus, and the choice of accommodation is far wider and more affordable. Nice is packed with hostels, charming budget hotels, and apartments within walking distance of the train station, making day trips into Monaco a breeze.

Upon arrival, you'll find that Monaco’s compact size is a boon for budget travellers. Much of the country is easily explored on foot, with public buses and a hop-on, hop-off tour available for those who prefer to save their legs. The best part? Many of Monaco’s iconic spots, such as Port Hercule, are completely free to enjoy. This glamorous marina, lined with luxurious yachts, is perfect for people-watching. You can then stroll up to the Prince’s Palace, admire the views over Port de Fontvieille, and even decide whether to take a paid tour of the royal residence in the summer months.

And then there’s Monte Carlo’s most famous landmark: the casino. Even if you’re not a gambler, its Belle Époque architecture and history make it a must-see. For those keen to try their luck, include a visit to the Monte Carlo Casino, where you will find all your favourite casino games in a truly exquisite setting. It’s worth dressing the part, as the elegant atmosphere is as much a part of the experience as the tables themselves.

If your ideal day involves the sea, Monaco has something for you. Larvotto Beach, a public and free spot, is perfect for a relaxing day, a swim, or a gelato from nearby cafés. Alternatively, you can experience the principality from a different perspective on a sightseeing boat cruise from Port Hercule, a scenic way to appreciate the coastline without committing to a full-day excursion.

Monaco’s charm lies in how much it offers in such a small space. You could fit the main highlights into a single day, yet the place has a way of tempting you back. Whether it’s for another stroll through its manicured streets, a return to Larvotto’s shore, or simply to watch the sunset over the harbour, you’ll find reasons to linger.

So, is Monaco still tourist-friendly? Absolutely. While it remains a playground for the wealthy, it’s also an accessible, welcoming destination for anyone curious enough to step into its world. With easy transport links, free attractions, and a little planning, you can enjoy its beauty without spending like a billionaire.
