Bogoyavlensko-Anastasinsky Woman’s Monastery

Ul. Simanovskogo 26     more than a year ago
Built during the era of Ivan the Terrible, this monastery (built around 1426) is set back about one block behind the Fire Tower. Topped by five domes, the Fyodorov Icon of the Blessed Virgin - the most treasured in all of Kostroma Region - is housed here. Legend has it that the icon appeared out of nowhere and was discovered in a forest in 1238 by Prince Vassily Yaroslavich, an early ruler of Kostroma, who was hunting. It is said to work miracles. There is a service every evening at 18:00 led by a woman and featuring a woman’s chorus, definitely not your average Orthodox worship.
