Located along what was once the strategically important Via Egnatia, the extremely well preserved town of Heraclea Lyncestis was founded in the 4th century BC by Philip II of Macedon. Containing original Greek and later Roman elements, highlights include the Roman amphitheatre, fragments of hypocaust and two beautifully preserved mosaics. There’s also a small museum, and the friendly gentleman that takes care of the place is full of inside knowledge that he’s only too willing to share. The site's signposted from the centre of Bitola, but there’s no sign for the major turn-off point. To get there, head south on the road towards Greece, turn right onto Bukovska and it’s a little way down on the right.
