OK OK, we know what you're thinking - a museum of gas... how interesting could it possibly be? Forgive us for interjecting, but behind this inobtrusive entrance lies over one hundred years of power and industry that shaped society way before electricity flicked its switch. Dedicated volunteers take you on a free one-hour tour of Ireland's only surviving coal gasworks where highlights include a retro collection of gas-powered gadgets, great views from the top of the large gasholder and Europe's largest surviving horizontal retorts (whose pipelike structure resembles a giant church organ). Quirky and insightful, this revelatory museum uniquely captures an important moment in modern history and is definitely worth a visit.
